The Great 26 Mile Challenge

 

If you have been thinking of walking the 26 miles of the Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) in Westchester and don’t know how to start, or don’t want to do it alone, this may be your opportunity. Over the next several months, there will be five walks that together will cover the 26 miles of the OCA trail in Westchester. Each walk will cover a segment of the trail ranging in distance from between 3 to 6 miles; they will be held on alternating Sundays beginning in April and ending in June as follows: 4/7, 4/14, 4/28, 5/5 and 5/19. In the event of inclement weather, alternate dates will be offered. The Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct awards a Patch and a Certificate to anyone who completes the entire 26 miles of the OCA trail in Westchester. If you are aiming for your patch, please sign up for all 5 walks as they are published on the website to avoid disappointment. (Patches are free to members of the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct, non-members will be charged $10/patch.)

The Details: Terrain will be mostly level with some moderate elevation changes, there will be roots and rocks; please wear appropriate footwear. Please bring lunch, snacks and water – there will be rest stops along the way. Rest rooms may not be immediately available on some segments.

Important Note: These are one-way walks. Plan accordingly if you will need to return to your starting point. Metro-North is available near the start and end of each walk.

WALK 1: Meet at Croton Gorge Park Parking Lot, near the Restrooms Croton Gorge Park, Rte. 129, Cortlandt, NY 10567 GPS Coordinates: 41.22603, -73.85770. Metro-North in Croton-Harmon – 15 minute taxi ride Walk will end at Nelson Sitting Park, corner of Spring St. and Everett Ave., Ossining 10562. Street parking available. Metro-North in Ossining – taxi or 20 minute walk

Walk #2 of the Great 26 Mile Challenge is a continuation of a 5-walk series designed for those who want to walk the entire 26 miles of the Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) in Westchester. The Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct awards a Patch and a Certificate to anyone who completes the 26 miles of the trail. This walk covers the segment of the OCA trail from Ossining to Tarrytown. Future walks will be held on alternating Sundays as follows: 4/28, 5/5 and 5/19.

The Details: Terrain will be mostly level with some moderate elevation changes, there will be roots and rocks; please wear appropriate footwear. Please bring lunch, snacks and water – there will be rest stops along the way.

Important Note: This is a one-way walk. Plan accordingly if you will need to return to your starting point.

Street parking available. Metro-North in Ossining – taxi or 20 minute walk
Walk will end at Neperan Park, 43-61 Neperan Rd., Tarrytown 10591
Municipal parking at McKeel Avenue and the Aqueduct (2 blocks north of Neperan Park). Limited street parking on Neperan Rd. Metro-North in Tarrytown – 15 minute walk
Restrooms: Please use restroom before walk as there are no restrooms along the route.

Walk #5 is the final walk of the Great 26 Mile Challenge designed to cover the entire 26 miles of the Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) in Westchester. Walkers who have completed the previous 4 segments of the Challenge will be awarded a Patch and a Certificate at the end of the walk. (Patches are free to members of the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct, non-members will be charged $10/patch.)

Walk will end at Lawton St. Yonkers 10705 GPS Coordinates: 40°54'26.2"N 73°52'56.9"W Street parking on Lawton St. and McLean Ave, Yonkers. Metro-North at Wakefield – 10 minute taxi ride.
