Was Edgar Allan Poe an Aqueduct walker?
Poe readers who own a copy of his Tales in the Great Illustrated Classics edition(1952) may remember the image of a melancholy Poe walking across the High Bridge. The High Bridge (1848) continued the route of the Old Croton Aqueduct from the Bronx across the Harlem River into Manhattan. Poe was a Bronx resident, living in a tiny cottage in rural Fordham Village, just east of the Aqueduct from the spring of 1846 until he died in October of 1849. The picture, which is also on view at Poe Cottage is titled, Poe Walking on the High Bridge. It appeared around 1900 as part of a series of illustrations by Bernard Jacob Rosenmeyer. Join us on February 12th to learn more about Poe and the High Bridge.
